Celebrating 40 Years of Heinz Refuge

Reflection 25 of 40

The short .6-mile loop from the visitor center that crosses the impoundment over the boardwalk is one of the most popular trails in the Refuge. The trail, which is now ADA accessible thanks to support from the Friends of Heinz Refuge, passes through several habitats including the impoundment, forest, and creek. Visitors can sit on the boardwalk and enjoy the view while students conduct environmental education activities learning about the water quality. This photo from the 1980s shows how much improvement we've made on the boardwalk. Did you know that the Refuge is looking to add an additional boardwalk that provides access to the tidal marsh? To learn more about this and other future plans of the refuge, please visit our Comprehensive Conservation Plan site.

Heinz Refuge celebrates its 40th anniversary with a collection of articles, stories, and images from the Refuge archives. We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane featuring 40 years of collaborative efforts to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats. Read more reflections in our archive. If you have a memory or story to share, please email it to info(at)friendsofheinzrefuge.org. We'll be gathering as many as we can for a special retrospect.
