Centennial Planting at Refuge by Providence Garden Club
By Jean Diehl

As we reported in our last newsletter, late summer will find members of the Providence Garden Club of Pennsylvania planting native grasses, perennials and shrubs in the meadow behind the public use wing of the Cusano Environmental Education Building (CEEC). The club approved up to $600 to purchase plants that will complete the planned landscaping on this tract. Additional funds will come from the Friends of the Heinz Refuge, should they be needed.

Following a landscaping plan developed by Andropogon Associates as part of the design phase of the CEEC, the garden club will begin its work during the second week in September. The Fish & Wildlife Service will assist by helping to prepare the area during the week prior to the planting date. Help will be needed on Saturday, September 14th by Trail Tamers and other interested volunteers as hundreds of plants are put into the ground.

Nurseries supplying plants for the project are North Creek Nurseries, and Octoraro Native Plant Nursery.

An interpretive brochure on the types, and benefits of native plants included in this landscaping project, will be produced after the planting effort has been completed, and will be made available to visitors within the year. To register to participate in this event, please contact the information desk at the CEEC. (215-365-3118)

This event will occur on our regular "Second Saturday" trail maintenance day.

A Floating Gift

Friends members Jim and Nancy Curley talk with Friends President Jean Diehl about the canoe they donated to the Friends.

In our last issue we published a request for the donation of a canoe to replace the one which was so badly damaged that it needed to be scrapped. Almost immediately Friends member, Nancy Curley called to tell us that she and her husband, Jim, were about to grant this wish. Thanks to the generosity of the Curley's, our canoe fleet is back up to full capacity, ready and waiting to go when we have our next refuge canoe tour in October.

Walmart Supports
Environmental Education

The Walmart store in Eddystone recently donated $500 to the Friends of the Heinz Refuge, with the funds to be used for the Earth Stewards program. Store Manager, Reggie Smith, worked with Board Member, Marie Koegel to facilitate the donation.
