Without
its Friends, without its Partners, without its Volunteers,
the John Heinz Refuge would be a mere shadow of its conservation-focused,
educational and just-plain-fun self. We invite you to join
hundreds of your neighbors whose contributions each year help
make the Refuge all it can be.
Donated
goods or services will enable the Friends and staff at the
John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum to continue
to thrive as environmental leaders through ongoing programs
and projects that:
- Focus
on improving water quality throughout the Darby Creek watershed.
- Partner
our Photo Group with area schools to teach children about
the environment, "through the eye of the lens".
Partner
our Trail Tamers Group with Refuge staff to implement a
unique "Earth Stewards" Program in Philadelphia
area schools.
- Restore
native species plants to Refuge habitats, and develop interpretive
landscaping using these native species plants.
- Plan
and construct a universally accessible boardwalk loop trail
extending from the environmental education building, through
the woods by the waters edge, and back to the building.
- Expand
the Environmental Resource Library.
- Establish
a fund that can be used to sponsor field trips to the Refuge
for disadvantaged urban school children.
Your
generous support can be designated for use in any several
ways:
-
To
the General Fund. Donations to the General Fund will
help with ongoing organizational expenses, educational projects,
and community outreach programs.
- To
the Endowment Fund.Interest accrued on the endowment
fund will be utilized for special projects on the refuge.
- Memorials.
Memorial gifts can be made to the General Fund, to the Endowment
Fund, or for a specific project.

- Gifts
of Expertise. There is a current critical need for the
services of amateur, or professional individuals, who are
experienced in landscape design, architects, or civil engineers,
to help with design specifications for the universally accessible
boardwalk trail, native species landscaping projects, and/stream-bank
stabilization projects along tidal Darby Creek.
- Sponsorship.
of field trips to the Refuge for urban school children,
either in general, or a school of your choice.
- Bequests.
Should you remember the Friends in your will, or in a trust,
we should be named as follows:
"The
Friends of the Heinz Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, a
nonprofit institution, incorporated in the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania, and with business
address
of 8601 Lindbergh Boulevard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19153".
- Gifts
in Kind. Business or personal contributions of computer
hardware and software, rowboats, canoes, a canoe trailer,
wood chipping equipment, or heavy-duty landscaping equipment
would all be welcome. Click here to
see our Wish List.
Giving
is a wonderful way to say "Thank you" to the Refuge
for good times you have spent there!

There
has been a tremendous positive response to the addition of
refuge canoe tours to the walk schedule. However, it is very
difficult, and time consuming, to bring the canoes from storage
to the launch two at a time in the bed of a truck. It is even
more difficult to do this, when we bring the canoes downstream
to a private dock that has been offered to us to use as a
launch site from time to time.

We
would really appreciate the donation of a canoe trailer which
carries 6 canoes to ease this difficult situation. The less
time we spend on transport, the more time we can spend on
the water. It doesn't have to be new, just functional.
