About the Friends
The Friends of the Heinz Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is a 501(c)(3), non-profit cooperating association founded in 1997 to assist the United States Fish & Wildlife Service in carrying out its educational, interpretive, and public use missions.
Our mission is three-fold: |

FOHR is working daily to meet a mighty challenge. The upkeep of all public lands, including the Heinz Refuge, is woefully underfunded in the federal budget. This lack of sufficient funding, coupled with natural disasters, has resulted in the decline or outright loss of habitat, difficulty in dealing with invasive species, and a shinking ability to harbor threatened and endangered species. The Friends of Heinz Refuge enjoyed many accomplishments in fiscal year 2011. Click here to read our 2011 Annual Report, as presented on October 30, 2011, during the annual membership dinner.
FOHR is but a small part of a nationwide network of "Friends" serving 530 National Wildlife Refuges. We take our job seriously, working hand-in-hand with refuge staff, and taking up the slack wherever possible.
Our many ongoing tasks include: working on trail construction and maintenance, removing invasive species, leading guided walks for the public, facilitating special events, assisting with educational programs, and raising funds for projects and programs that the federal budget fails to cover.
