Volunteer with the Friends
Change Your Part of the World!
Put your time, talents, and enthusiasm to work at the Heinz Refuge. Have fun while assisting refuge staff in meeting the dual challenges of maintaining and enhancing wildlife habitat, and also providing quality educational and recreational expereinces for the public. Volunteer opportunities are listed below.
Walk Leader – For over 20 years naturalist volunteers have been leading walks that are free and open to the public every weekend. Thousands of local citizens have been turned on to birding, butterflies, trees, and all manner of wild things through these walks. Becoming a walk leader is a great way to keep your outdoor skills sharp and make new friends while enjoying nature on your doorstep. Orientation will be provided and scheduling is very flexible.
Environmental Education Aide – Work with teachers and refuge staff, assisting students or youth groups who come to the refuge for environmental education activities.
Special Events Aides
Staff refuge information table at public events both on and off the refuge, and/or help out with regularly scheduled annual events on the refuge, including:
- Cradle of Birding (third Saturday in September)
- Darby Creek cleanup (Earth Day week in April)
- International Migratory Bird Day (in May every year)
- Pathways to Fishing (in May and June every year)
Photo Group – Contribute to the photographic database of flora and fauna found on the refuge, help document refuge events, or work with students at photography-based summer camp, or who are learning about the environment “through the eye of the lens.”
Sales Clerk – Work in Tinicum Treasures, our little nature store, for about four hours, one or more day(s) a week. Profits from sales help support refuge programs and projects which might otherwise go unfunded due to federal budget shortfalls.
Trail Tamer – Help maintain hiking and biking trails, plan and develop native species habitat, remove invasive species, or help build and maintain boardwalks, benches, and photo blinds.
Front Desk Volunteer – For a few hours, one day a week, you can greet visitors, and answer their questions.
